We’re happy to announce that Mychael Gabriel is March 2012′s Featured Artist.
His song “Alice in Wonderland” has received high rankings since it started playing in 2011 and oour listeners are still digging his music. He has since released new music and you should check it out via his web site.

Mychael’s web site describes him as “Musician, writer, audio engineer, producer, performer – Mychael Gabriel lives and breathes music. His innovative style is one that spans across multiple genres – in turn, giving each new creation it’s own unique flare. With every project being released in a “Triptych” form – each series of three songs are works connected by an intertwining theme; associated either through sentiment, sound, or profound passion. These Triptychs are created to express the multitude of emotions encountered throughout the journey of the human experience.

“Alice In Wonderland: Triptych”, the first of Mychael Gabriel releases, paints a picture with three songs that capture the imagination through a vast array of breathtaking melodies, heart pounding rhythms, and entrancing harmonies bringing to life a captivating story that has been told for almost 150 years.

Since then, Mychael Gabriel has went on to release “Heart”, “The Warriors”, and his latest “Cruising On A Starscape” – all within the Triptych form, and all in their own unique style. Some echo with a splash of the 80’s, while others have a modern touch. Each and every song tells their own story – and you must listen to the pulse of each to Triptych to truly understand them.

The music by Mychael Gabriel can be heard as a din of a forthcoming message, whose final result will have been worth the years waiting. These works are created to touch and speak to the listener, with an invitation to make music with all your soul and awaken the dawn. Each note is bringing forth a sound as reminiscent as the spirit of the past and as daring as the possibilities of the future.

Mychael Gabriel has come to venture on a crusade in search of new musical horizons. However, such a venture cannot, and should not be sought alone. Therefore, we petition you to participate on this journey as we go forth, in order to bring into existence a new beginning, in the expression, which we call music.”
Pongid is pleased to introduce this group of talented musicians to our listeners and readers. From their message to their music, Earth and Next Society is a classic rock band for the 21st century. Check their music out on our stream and make sure that you visit their web site here - and buy their music on iTunes here.

Earth and the Next Society describe themselves as “the creative project birthed by musician and songwriter Michael Shields. Created as a platform of expression and to provide the voice of reason regarding the issues that are currently relevant in the modern times of disorder and uncertainty. Earth and the Next Society create music to remind us as human beings who all speak the universal language of music to look in ourselves and find our own inherit wisdom and act on it to help better ourselves as a society. This mantra quickly grew in popularity and Shields enlisted the help of an incredible entourage of fellow musicians that brought their own personal style to the collective, producing a distinctive sound that has its roots deeply embedded in the Golden Age of Rock music and beyond. Earth and the Next Society is comprised of Shields on vocals and lead guitar, Jimmy Mack on bass, David Bedell on drums and Tom McMillian on keyboard.”

We are pleased to name The Ellis Collective as October’s Featured Band for October 2011. We’ve been playing “Means what it means” on our station since late summer. Go check out their web site at http://www.theelliscollective.com. You can also join up on their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/theelliscollective.

They describe themselves and their music like this:

Triple J’s Richard Kingsmill praised the “classic Australian sound” of The Ellis Collective as their second single ’7 Days Later’ took out the latest Unearthed Competition. To accompany these accolades, the band has just finished playing in the line-up at ‘Groovin’ The Moo’ alongside a bevy of massive names including Architecture In Helsinki, Datarock and House Of Pain.

Winning Triple J Unearthed is the latest highlight for the Indie-folk six-piece since the release of their first single in February. Launched alongside The Beautiful Girls at the Summer Rhythms Festival, the track quickly consolidated its position at the top of Triple Js Unearthed Charts. With a ground-swell of fan support, their second single, ’7 Days Later’ quickly followed suit and became a recurring feature on Triple J’s Roots’n’All program. Throw in regular airplay from community radio stalwarts 3RRR, PBS and 4ZzZ and a string of sold out launch concerts and there wasn’t too far to dig before The Ellis Collective were Unearthed.

No strangers to a festival stage, The Ellis Collective’s recent successes are testament to their distinctive brand of songwriting that has won over festival crowds at Australia’s iconic Woodford Music Festival and National Folk Festivals and secured supports with the likes of US folk punk legends Tom Gabel (Against Me!) and Chuck Ragan (Hot Water Music).

Stepping away from the spotlight in 2010 to focus solely on recording, The Ellis Collective have carefully crafted a studio sound that remains faithful to their unflinching live performances. The Ellis Collective’s debut album ‘Means What It Means’ (out July 2011) was lovingly recorded on old-school two-inch tape at Infidel Studios and is a captivating record of brutally honest Australian song-writing.

The album underscores The Ellis Collective’s ability to seamlessly blend and borrow from a diverse range of styles, wielding an ambidextrous musicality to create a sound that is undeniably unique and unmistakably Australian. Featuring vocals that echo Gareth Liddiard with lyrics to evoke John Darnielle and Conor Oberst set against a backdrop of soaring string sections and multi-layered harmonies, The Ellis Collective take an unconventional approach to storytelling that recounts the jagged-edged disappointments of everyday Australian life.”

We describe them as “A band that makes music that you want to add to your playlist right now!”

Tim Wenzel (aka videoscore music compositions and Timothy’s Dreams) writes music for visual media and for inspirational listening in a broad, original style perhaps best described as a New Age/Celtic acoustic fusion.

Some of his Awards:
Finalist, 2010 Hollywood Music in Media Awards, for “Birka”

Honorable Mention, Great Lakes Song Writing, Contest for “Appalachian Spring”

Honorable Mention, West Coast Songwriters International Songwriting Contest “Birka”

“Snow Falling Softly” has been selected as music to be used in a Hollywood movie called “The Lid”, to be released Jan 2012.

NEW!!! Finalist TWICE for the 2011 Hollywood Music in Media Awards, for songs “Snow Falling Softly” and “Luminous Flight” (w/ Sarah Gurr) – winners to be announced in Hollywood in November 2011.

Tim talks a little bit about his background: “I studied the piano from age 5 until about age 13 – my teacher wouldn’t let me play rock and roll, only classical. So I quit. When I left home I bought a parlor grand that I dragged from place to place. Finally I moved to Berkely CA to be edgekated so I finally sold the piano – my car barely made it over the Rockies as it was. In Berkely I could sign up for piano use in a private room (e.g., closet) so I continued to play and record using a small tape recorder. When I got a real job, I bought a keyboard. When sequencers appeared, and computers, I started writing in ernest. My music seems to be maturing lately, more in touch with the ghosts and spirits that haunt me, that force me (joyfully) into writing and playing. I am collaborating with some very talented friends and that has been very rewarding.”
